How drugs hijack the dopamine reward circuit
The brain's reward circuit centres on dopamine neurons running from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Natural rewards like food and social contact release dopamine here in a regulated way that reinforces useful behaviour. Many drugs of abuse trigger far larger and more sustained dopamine release in the same pathway, by some estimates several times the response to natural rewards, which is part of why they are so reinforcing.
Repeated overstimulation drives the circuit to adapt. The system becomes less responsive to everyday rewards while cues associated with the drug gain outsized power to trigger craving, shifting behaviour toward compulsive seeking.
Why addiction is understood as a brain condition, not a choice
These neuroadaptations help explain why addiction persists despite harm and why willpower alone is often insufficient. Changes also occur in prefrontal regions involved in self-control, weakening the brakes on impulsive use. This framing has shifted treatment toward combining behavioural therapies with medications and support rather than relying on punishment.
