A metabolite of arginine that tunes nitric oxide
Agmatine is produced when the amino acid arginine is decarboxylated. One of its notable actions is modulation of the nitric oxide synthase enzymes. It can inhibit the inducible form (iNOS), which is associated with inflammatory nitric oxide production, while interacting differently with the endothelial form (eNOS) that governs blood-vessel signalling. This dual behaviour is the basis for claims that it both dampens an inflammatory pathway and influences vascular tone.
Agmatine also interacts with several other targets, including imidazoline and NMDA receptors, so its overall profile is broad rather than nitric-oxide-specific.
What is supported versus extrapolated
Much agmatine research is preclinical, in cells or animals, and human evidence for the pump or anti-inflammatory benefits marketed to lifters is limited. The enzyme-level mechanisms are documented, but reliable performance outcomes in people are not established, so claims should be read cautiously.
