How endurance training grows the capillary network
Repeated endurance exercise stimulates angiogenesis, the growth of new capillaries, around trained muscle fibers. A denser capillary network shortens the diffusion distance for oxygen and nutrients into the muscle and for carbon dioxide and metabolic byproducts out of it, supporting sustained aerobic work. This adaptation typically develops over weeks to months of consistent training.
Greater capillary density usually accompanies other aerobic adaptations such as increased mitochondrial content, so the muscle both receives more oxygen and uses it more effectively.
Why it matters for aerobic performance
Improved capillarization is one reason trained endurance athletes can sustain higher fractions of their aerobic capacity. By easing oxygen delivery and waste clearance at the fiber level, it complements central adaptations in the heart and lungs.
