From dietary choline to a neurotransmitter
Acetylcholine is built inside cholinergic neurons by the enzyme choline acetyltransferase, which joins choline to an acetyl group supplied by acetyl-CoA. Choline is therefore the rate-relevant raw material. After acetylcholine is released and acts on its receptors, the enzyme acetylcholinesterase breaks it back down, and the freed choline is recycled by reuptake to be used again, a tight loop that conserves the precursor.
Why brain-penetrant forms are preferred for cholinergic support
To raise the choline available to neurons, a supplement has to cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently. Alpha-GPC and CDP-choline (citicoline) are the forms usually chosen for this purpose because both are well absorbed and brain-penetrant, and both ultimately liberate choline that can feed acetylcholine synthesis. CDP-choline additionally supplies cytidine, used in membrane phospholipid pathways.
Supplying more precursor does not guarantee proportionally more acetylcholine, since synthesis is also enzyme- and demand-regulated. This is general educational information, not medical advice. Anyone with a neurological condition or taking cholinergic medication should consult a qualified professional before use.
