What makes an amino acid essential
Of the twenty amino acids that build human proteins, nine cannot be synthesized by the body in adequate amounts and must come from food. These nine are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. The remaining amino acids are classed as nonessential or conditionally essential, meaning the body can usually make them unless illness or rapid growth raises demand.
Histidine is sometimes described separately because adults deplete it slowly, but it is now firmly counted among the essential nine. A useful mnemonic strings the first letters together, though remembering the function matters more than the order.
Complete versus complementary proteins
A complete protein supplies all nine essential amino acids in proportions usable by the body. Animal sources and soy are complete, while many individual plant foods are limited in one or two, commonly lysine in grains or methionine in legumes. Combining complementary plant foods across a day, such as beans with rice, covers the full set without requiring them at the same meal.
