How the brain clears its waste
The brain lacks the conventional lymphatic vessels that drain waste from other tissues. The glymphatic system, described in the past decade, is a proposed route by which cerebrospinal fluid flows along the spaces surrounding blood vessels, mixes with interstitial fluid, and carries away metabolic byproducts. Among the substances cleared is amyloid-beta, a protein of interest in Alzheimer research.
The pathway depends on the support cells called astrocytes and on water channels (aquaporin-4) concentrated at their endfeet around vessels.
Why sleep keeps coming up
Studies in animals report that glymphatic flow increases substantially during sleep, when the spaces between brain cells appear to widen and allow fluid to move more freely. This is one of the more cited reasons sleep is linked to brain maintenance. The human evidence is still developing, and the precise magnitude and clinical importance of the effect remain under active study.
