The three-organ relay behind the stress response
The HPA axis is the slower, hormonal arm of the stress response. A stressor prompts the hypothalamus to release corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH signals the pituitary to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which travels in the blood to the adrenal cortex and stimulates cortisol release. The name traces this hypothalamus to pituitary to adrenal route.
Cortisol then acts widely, raising available glucose and tuning the body for a sustained demand, while also feeding back to switch the axis off once the stressor passes.
What changes when activation does not switch off
The axis is built for episodes, not constant load. When activation becomes chronic, persistently elevated cortisol is associated with effects across multiple systems, including dampened immune responses, altered metabolism, and suppression of reproductive signaling. These are associations described in the literature, not guaranteed individual outcomes.
