The staged drift from compensation to high blood sugar
Insulin resistance often progresses through recognizable stages. Early on, tissues respond less to insulin, so the pancreas compensates by secreting more, producing high circulating insulin (hyperinsulinemia) while blood glucose still looks normal. Over time the beta cells that make insulin can strain under the sustained demand. As their output falls behind, fasting glucose begins to drift upward, passing through prediabetic ranges and, in some people, into type 2 diabetes.
Because the early stage hides behind normal glucose readings, insulin resistance can be present for years before standard glucose tests flag it.
What modifies the trajectory
The progression is not fixed. Factors including body weight, physical activity, diet, sleep, and genetics influence the pace, and changes in lifestyle can improve insulin sensitivity at several points along the path. The stages also vary in timing and reversibility between individuals.
