One mineral, hundreds of enzymatic roles
Magnesium is a cofactor for a very large number of enzyme systems, commonly cited as more than three hundred. A central reason is that the biologically active form of ATP, the cell's energy currency, is bound to magnesium; reactions that use or make ATP therefore depend on it. This places magnesium at the heart of energy metabolism, DNA and protein synthesis, and ion transport.
The breadth of these roles is why magnesium status touches so many systems rather than one organ.
Where its effects show up in the body
Magnesium helps regulate muscle contraction and relaxation (it counterbalances calcium's contractile signal), supports normal nerve function and sleep regulation, contributes to vascular tone and blood pressure control, participates in glucose handling and insulin signaling, and is a structural component of bone. Marginal intake is common, and low levels can show up across several of these areas at once.
