A toolkit of reasoning frameworks
Mental models are reusable thinking tools that transfer across domains. First principles reasoning strips a problem down to its core facts and rebuilds logic from there, avoiding inherited assumptions. Second-order thinking asks not only 'what happens?' but 'what happens next?' and 'who else is thinking about this?', uncovering hidden consequences. Inversion flips the problem: instead of asking how to succeed, ask how you would fail, then reverse the answer.
Each model illuminates different aspects. Opportunity cost thinking reminds you that choosing A means forgoing B, a tradeoff that is often invisible. Systems thinking examines feedback loops and interdependencies rather than isolated cause-and-effect. These are not exotic; they are practical habits that compound into better decisions.
Combining models for deeper insight
A single model solves one lens on the problem; combining several reveals blind spots. A business might succeed at first principles (the core product logic is sound) but fail at second-order thinking (ignoring how competitors will respond), or miss the opportunity cost (the revenue from this bet blocks a better bet elsewhere).
Expertise in a field is partly the internalization of the most useful mental models for that domain. Finance professionals think in opportunity cost and systems feedback. Engineers think in first principles and failure modes. Decision makers who collect and practice diverse models become more adaptable and less vulnerable to the tunnel vision that comes from applying only one framework.
