Zone intensity and management frequency drive placement
Permaculture divides land into zones based on how frequently the farmer visits and manages it. Zone 0 is the home (daily), Zone 1 is the immediate yard (daily to weekly), Zone 2 is managed land (weekly to monthly), Zone 3 is semi-wild production (monthly to seasonal), Zone 4 is extensive use (seasonal), and Zone 5 is wild and unmanaged.
High-maintenance plants (herbs, vegetables, soft fruit) cluster near the house where daily observation catches pests and water needs. Perennial productive plants (fruit and nut trees, berry bushes) occupy Zone 1-2. Low-maintenance animals and crops move to outer zones as management intensity drops.
Nested design patterns and resource flow
Zone structure reduces work by letting gravity, water flow, and natural systems move nutrients and materials from outer zones inward. Manure and mulch from outer zones supply Zone 1 soil. Water runoff from roofs supplies drip systems in Zone 1.
Each zone also represents an energy investment layer. Home food production (Zone 1) is high-labor, high-return per area. Outer zones contribute subsistence (firewood, forage, wild foods, habitat) with minimal active management, relying on observation and occasional harvesting.
Adapting zones to property size and goals
On small urban properties, zones compress: a backyard combines Zones 0-2 in a few meters. On large rural land, zones expand across acres. The principle scales to any property: high-input near home, extensive far away.
Permaculture zones also guide succession planning. A newly cleared field starts as Zone 3 (semi-managed for food/forage). Over years, it can transition to Zone 2 (perennial orchards) or remain extensive. Zone design reflects both current needs and future vision for the land.
