Staggering carbs, protein, and caffeine before training
Pre-workout nutrition is less about a single meal and more about staggering inputs by how long each takes to act. Carbohydrate is often taken one to three hours out so it is digested and available without sitting heavy in the stomach. A protein feeding one to two hours before helps keep amino acids available during and after the session.
Caffeine, when used, is typically timed 30 to 60 minutes before to align with its absorption peak. Fluids and electrolytes are best handled steadily rather than crammed in just before starting.
Why the closer the meal, the smaller and simpler
Larger, fattier, or higher-fiber meals digest slowly and can cause discomfort if eaten too close to intense exercise, so meals nearer to training are usually smaller and lower in fat and fiber. The diagram lays these inputs along a countdown to the session.
This is general educational information, not medical advice. Tolerance is highly individual, and people with diabetes or digestive conditions should plan pre-exercise eating with a qualified professional.
