Combining engagement signals into one score
A session quality score blends pages per session, time on site, scroll depth, and conversion into a single composite number. A user who loads one product page, scrolls halfway down, and bounces scores low. One who loads five pages, spends three minutes navigating, scrolls to 90%, and adds to cart scores high. The score predicts whether that session has momentum toward purchase. By measuring it, you can identify which traffic sources or campaigns send engaged visitors versus quality tire-kickers. A paid-search campaign with high conversion rate but low session quality might be converting low-intent impulse buyers; a campaign with lower conversion but high quality score might be building trust and long-term value.
Setting thresholds and weights
A crude session-quality binary (bounced or not) misses the nuance. A scored model lets you segment: high-quality sessions from loyal users, medium-quality new-visitor explorers, and bounced sessions that need retargeting. Weights matter: for a B2B SaaS site, time on site and pages viewed matter more than scroll depth. For a fashion e-commerce site, images viewed and high scroll depth matter more than minutes spent. The weights should reflect what actually predicts conversion in your business, not generic industry norms. Testing which component has the strongest predictive power helps you identify what's the true signal and what's noise.
Using session quality to optimize budget allocation
Traffic sources that consistently send high-quality sessions warrant higher spend allocation. Those that send high-bounce traffic might need either different messaging (to match expectations) or different audience targeting (to reach the right buyer). Session quality also uncovers channel conflicts: sometimes expensive branded-search traffic has lower quality because your paid ad cannibalized organic, so users saw the same message twice and had less curiosity. Combining session quality with incrementality testing (control groups) reveals the real story: does this channel send quality traffic because it attracts great audiences, or does it send quality traffic only because you're retargeting converters?
