Money management through the buy/eco cycle
Counter-Strike's round-by-round economy is a hidden complexity most new players miss. Each round your team earns money from kills (250-900 dollars), round wins (3,250), and bomb plants (300). You spend it on weapons, armor, and utility. A 'full buy' happens when your team has 20,000+ combined dollars and everyone gears up with rifles, body armor, and grenades. An 'eco' (economy round) is when you've just lost a round and collectively spend under 5,000 to save for the next round.
Between full buy and eco sits the 'force buy' or 'half-buy': you spend 10,000-15,000 to get upgraded pistols and some utility without committing to rifles. It's a calculated gamble on winning a 50/50 fight against a better-equipped opponent.
Strategic gambling with team finances
The best teams use spreadsheets to plan their economy across multiple rounds. After a loss, pros know exactly which rounds to eco, which to half-buy, and which to full-buy to arrive at round 15 with enough money for a second full buy. A wrong eco call in round 8 can cost the entire map. This is why player communication is critical: if one person buys rifles while the team is eco-ing, the team gets stomped and the economy spirals into an unrecoverable deficit.
