The terms, in plain English.

These terms govern your use of the Scrollchart embed library. They’re short on purpose. We want you to read them.

1. The deal

Scrollchart is free forever for compliant sites. There is no premium tier, no subscription, and no surprise paywall. In exchange, we ask three things:

1. You won’t use the embeds for anything illegal, hateful, or designed to deceive.
2. You agree that the diagram and the explainer paragraph beneath it are editorial content authored and maintained by Scrollchart. You’re embedding our paragraph; you’re not appropriating it.
3. You agree that the explainer paragraph may, on rare occasion and only where the topic is directly relevant, include a single contextual reference link to a high-quality external resource - handled with the same editorial standards as a footnote in a Wikipedia article.

2. What we promise

• Free forever for compliant sites. No paywall surprise.
• One link maximum per embed, ever. We will never inject more than one outbound link in a single embedded diagram.
• No tracking pixels, no third-party scripts, no fingerprinting. The only network call is an analytics ping carrying instance ID and referrer URL.
• Right to opt out of contextual links by emailing us. You keep full embed access.
• Right to be forgotten - request instance deletion and the embed self-disables gracefully.
• Editorial standards published. Contextual links appear only when the destination is genuinely relevant and adds value to the reader.

3. What you agree not to do

• Strip, hide, or restyle the explainer paragraph or the footer attribution.
• Modify the embed snippet to point to a different CDN or proxy our content.
• Re-host the diagram bundles on your own infrastructure as if they were yours.
• Use the embed on sites that traffic in illegal content, hate, or deception.
• Misrepresent Scrollchart’s relationship to your site or its content.

If you breach these terms, we may revoke your instance ID. The embed self-disables to a “broken / restore” state with a clear message. We will never take more than that - no legal threats, no damages claims for honest mistakes. We just turn the embed off.

4. Editorial standards for contextual links

When we add a contextual reference link to an explainer paragraph, the link must:

1. Be directly relevant to the topic of the diagram and the explainer text.
2. Point to a high-quality, authoritative resource - not a thin marketing page.
3. Be one link per embed, no more.
4. Be editorially defensible - the kind of link you would have wanted in a Wikipedia footnote.

Our editorial team reviews every link before it goes live. If we get it wrong on your embed, email us and we will remove it within 48 hours.

5. Liability

The diagrams are provided as-is. We make every effort to ensure the data and labels are accurate, but we are not your fact-checker. If the diagram’s factual content matters to your context (medical, legal, financial), independently verify before publishing.

We are not liable for any losses arising from your use of the embeds. This is a free service; we owe you neither warranty nor SLA.

6. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms occasionally. Existing embeds remain governed by the terms in effect when you copied them - we will not retroactively impose stricter rules on already-deployed embeds.
